Ciou hails from Paris, France. Her work features the admittedly well worn standard of spooky girls and their animals consorts, however Ciou’s unapologetic punk style (reminiscent of teenage notebook scrawls dialed up to 11) breathes a new brash life into the theme.
Her sweet and sour heavy metal nymphs live out their wild carnivalesque fairytales on found vintage papers, taken from old medical books, dictionaries, and nature manuals. Her line-work is by turns thickly layered like decadent rocker girl eyeliner and then meticulously thin and ornate like stitchwork.
Ciou has exhibited in Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Toulouse,Berlin, Los Angeles, Rome and Barcelona. This is her first US solo show.

Since 1996, Parisian gallery Arts Factory focuses on the promotion of the contemporary underground graphic scene. From Daniel Johnston to some of the best French lowbrow artists (Ciou, Véronique Dorey, Blanquet,...), this “lo-fi gallery” has produced over 150 exhibitions and events in nearly 14 years.
Originally located in the Abbesses / Montmartre area, Arts Factory is now a nomad space, searching the best sites for each new exhibition. For the “Paris Calling” exhibition at Galerie Mekanik, they have selected art, publications and prints featuring some of their very best graphic artists...

Edited by Venusdea Label of Barbara Canepa.
Photography and graphism by Julien lesur.
A dark illustrated book, surreal, with a tidy manufacture : hard red cloth cover, 80 pages.

Chat Siamois is my first publication with my artworks. Guillaume Bianco was inspired by my own universe to write the story. And then, he created a common universe. The label Venusdea is a new international art label directed by Barbara Canepa and Clotilde Vu.

Emmy Hyacinthe Muffin, a little girl like any other ?
Not really...
People think she's a witch ! And it only gets worse when during a full moon night, a black widow slides into her throat. From then, her life will never be the same.

WHAT YOU MISSED LAST WEEK:

Saturday:

"KOCHXBOS (1e Anjeliersdwarsstrat 3) has mounted an exhibition for Ciou (France) titled "NYMPH".
The more 3D stared at her work the more is seemed familiar. However, the only artist's name that came to mind was William Blake who is better known as a metaphysical poet of the 18th century who just happened to be an accomplished etcher as well. What is the connection? I guess it is the bizarre and unexpected nature of the imagery that related to Blake.

Even more interesting is the fact that half the show is in b/w (Blake, of course, only worked in b/w) and the other half color...and the latter work could not be more so. The colors are vibrant and sometimes ever so sweet. The b/w pen and ink drawings are whimsical in a sense where the color work comes across like a friendly nightmare.

Two red dots 30 minutes before the official opening time. The sales resulted from the gallery's bulk e-mailing; and the purchase was made, on-line, by an American in the San Francisco Bay area. Hey, guys and gals, the Internet works!"
